Laney Johnson wins Minerva Middle School spelling bee

Minerva seventh-grader Laney Johnson became the middle school spelling bee champion Feb. 14 after spelling the word “maggot” correctly in the 17th round.Seventh-grader Naomi Hackbart was the runner-up.The students in the bee qualified by scoring in the top category of spellers after two rounds of written exams. Carrollton, Malvern, Minerva crown wrestling champions

Amsterdam man charged with murderof cellmate

An Amsterdam man charged with murdering his cellmate at the Jefferson County Jail is claiming insanity as his defense.  Ronald D. Smith, whose address is listed as Cricket St., Amsterdam, entered a not guilty by reason of insanity plea during an arraignment hearing Feb. 14 in Jefferson County Common Pleas Court.
