Records fall as girls golf team begins swinging clubs

Records continue to fall nearly every time the Carrollton girls golf team takes the course.
The Lady Warriors have compiled an impressive 3-0 mark in dual matches and have won two tournaments and placed second in two since opening the season in early August.
The Lady Warriors most recent win was a 53-stroke victory at the Marilyn Jackson Memorial Tournament Aug. 15 at Alliance, where they shot a 343 to claim the win. Louisville was second with a 396. Other Eastern Buckeye Conference (EBC) teams participating included Alliance, fourth; Marlington, fifth; and West Branch, sixth.
Senior Ashlee Garner carded an 80 to pace the winners. Senior Claire Hostetler added an 86 while sophomores Kaylee Russell contributed an 86 and Jada Moore a 91. Senior Mackenzie Rummell put up a 108.
Tri Valley Invitational
The Lady Warriors broke a record they set just six days prior to the Aug. 14 Tri Valley Lady Dawg Invitational. The team carded a 327 to capture the win, which broke a record of 350 for 18 holes set in 2017.
Garner earned medalist honors with a 75 and Hostetler finished third individually. Moore added an 86 and Russell an 89.
Garaway Tournament
Carrollton placed second at the Lady Pirates Invitational Aug. 7 behind the hosts, who recorded a 304 score in a tournament played at Zoar. Carrollton’s 350 score was recorded by Garner with 76, which placed her third in the contest. Hostetler fired an 82, followed by Moore, 88, Russell 104 and Rummell, 110.
Malvern’s Lauren Brown carded a 97, playing as an individual in the tournament.
EBC Pre-Season
The Warriors finished runners-up to Garaway and Hostetler was the runner-up medalist in the 15-team EBC early tournament, held Aug. 8 at Pleasant View.
The Lady Pirates captured the team title with a 326, followed by Carrollton 329, Tusky Valley 354, Canton South 379, North Royalton 380 and Louisville 384.
Marlington’s Zoe Mort earned medalist honors with a 70.
Scoring for Carrollton were Garner, 82, medalist runner-up; Moore 84; Russell 89; and Rummell, 111.
Regular season
Carrollton topped Minerva and Fort Frye 171, 195, 251 in a tri match Aug. 11 on the par 35 Carroll Meadows course.
Hostetler earned medalist honors with a 39, followed by Garner one stroke behind. Moore and Russell both carded a 46.
Madalynn Bartley paced Minerva with a 58, followed by Delaney Sell 62, Lily Mitchell 63 and Hannah Kirkpatrick 68.
In the season opener Aug. 10 against West Branch at Carroll Meadows, the Carrollton squad broke the previous record of 163 for nine holes with a 159 score. West Branch tallied a 206 score.
Garner shot a one over par 36 as Hostetler and Russell both carded 40s and Moore added a 43.
“We are extremely excited with how the girls have been playing so far this season,” commented Carrollton Coach Todd English. We feel that each golfer can improve their games as the season progresses mainly from course management and an improved short game.”
