Robert R. Whitmore (“Pap”) began his next adventure with his loving wife in Heaven on Tuesday, Aug. 20, at the age of 80.
Bob was born to Robert D. and Evelyn (Flitcroft) Whitmore on April 23, 1944. He married his high school sweetheart, Linda Rae Burch on June 13, 1964. They spent 58 wonderful, joy filled years together. The only time Bob and Linda were not attached at the hip was the year Bob courageously protected our country. During the Vietnam War, Bob served as a military policeman. During his time away, Bob wrote Linda a letter every day, sometimes 2-3 times a day. Linda was always unsure what she’d find at the post office waiting for her as Bob would send anything from snakes to Komodo dragons, frogs, as well as other “things.”
Bob and Linda went on to share a beautiful life full of adventures with their two children, Bobby and Kathy. Together, they would spend time exploring the outdoors, hunting as a family out west, traveling the country and creating a life of adventure. Bob enjoyed many things in life including reading, adventuring with his brothers, spending time in the gym, hunting, exploring the outdoors, porch sitting, bird watching, but most importantly, spending time with the ones he loved. Bob created many long-lasting memories for his kids and grandkids by getting down on the floor or grass with them and playing with them as if he was one of the kids. He created fun and exciting childhoods and the most magical Christmas’. He taught his children that the most important things in life are God, family and country in that order. He created a legacy with his wife that his family intends to carry on based on these principles.
Bob had a special relationship with his mother, Evelyn “Gram” Whitmore. They spent most days together with Bob’s wife Linda. Together, the trio enjoyed quick getaways for a weekend of shopping, playing cards and Upwords nightly and spending countless hours Goodwill shopping.
Bob is now reunited with his “lady” (as he often referred to her) Linda, his father, Robert D. Whitmore, his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Orville and Ruth Burch, and his brother Joseph Whitmore.
He is survived by his mother, Evelyn (Flitcroft) Whitmore, his children, Robert E. (Donna) Whitmore and Kathleen (William) Stewart, one brother, Edward (Nancy) Whitmore, 6 grandchildren and their spouses, and 5 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Bob will be Thursday, Aug. 22 at 12 p.m. in the Amsterdam Church of God with Rev. David Guess officiating. Burial will follow at Westview Cemetery in Carrollton. Visitation will be Thursday from 10 a.m. until time of services in the church.
Dodds Funeral Home assisted the family with services.
