Laura “Anne” Stewart

Laura “Anne” Stewart, loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother departed this life peacefully on July 25; answering the summons of the Lord to enter eternal rest.

Born July 25 th 1929 in Dilliner, Pa. she was the daughter of the late Steven Ostoja and Celia Opal (Mathews) Sarapa. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Dunkard for 69 years and worked for Canton City Schools, retiring after 32 years of dedication.

Anne, the epitome of strength and perseverance, cherished her family and friends. Her passions were gardening and canning. She was known for being the best “greeter” in church; giving everyone a hug that passed through the doors. Faith sustained her heart and the shenanigans she created fueled our many adventures. She was not afraid to stand her ground, yet her heart was filled with generosity, compassion and integrity. Her love for our family was immeasurable, blessing each of us with many precious memories. She was proud of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; all who sustained her youthful spirit. Anne was also loved and respected by those who knew her, never knowing a stranger; becoming everyone’s “Nan”. She had a God given talent that enabled her to brighten the lives of everyone no matter how ill or down-hearted they were; often ministering to the residents of Carroll Healthcare Center with her best friend, the late Joann Baughman. Anne blessed many lives and was treasured by all. I believe mom is standing beside St. Peter greeting those entering the Pearly Gates!

Anne is survived by her three children Celia (Perry) Watkins of Minerva, Harry (Bess) Stewart Jr. of Massillon and Donalyn (Joseph) McCaulley of Dellroy; two sister-in-laws’ LouVernia Robinson and Pearlene Philips of WV. Five grandchildren, Gene Showalter of Navarre, Terry (Anna) Showalter of Alabama, Raechel (Shane) Sickafoose of Canton, Chalynne (Dillon) Moore of Dellroy, and Treg (Miranda) McCaulley of East Liverpool. Sixteen great-grandchildren; Katelyne, Karri, Catherine, Jacob, Shawn, Jessica, Terry Jr, Blake, Michaela, Wiatt, Camryn, Hadley, Genevieve, Addison, Makenna and Hunter. Along with numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

Anne was preceded in death by the love of her life Harry Stewart, infant daughter, parents, brothers’ George, Adam and Steven, son-in-law Joseph and grandson Joshua.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, July 29 at First Christian Church in Malvern with Rev. Bill Newell officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the services at the church with graveside service to follow at Baxter’s Ridge Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to Community Hospice, 716 Commercial Avenue S.W., New Philadelphia, Ohio  44663. The Baxter-Gardner Funeral Home in Sherrodsville has been entrusted with arrangements.
