Minerva man found dead after standoff with law enforcement

A Minerva area man is dead following a standoff with law enforcement June 24 in Carroll County.

Sheriff Calvin Graham said his officers were called to a home in the 9000 block of Metro St. for suicidal male with a gun pointed at this wife at 3:15 p.m. The woman was able to escape from the home. Shots were fired at deputies at 3:24 p.m. Deputies were able to take cover behind vehicles and were not injured. Graham said the shots were a combination of rifle and shotgun rounds.

When entry was made into the home at 5:38 p.m., Benny Joiner was found deceased inside of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot.

Canton Regional SWAT, Minerva Police Dept. Ohio Division of Wildlife, East Canton Police and Minerva fire and EMS assisted at the scene. The Stark County sheriff provided a drone. Carroll County Coroner Dr. Mandal Haas also assisted. Ohio BCI&I processed the scene and gathered evidence.
