Grand jury indicts former bowling coach

A Magnolia man was indicted on multiple felony charges involving the pandering of sexually oriented material involving juveniles by a Carroll County grand jury. 

David D. DeFord, 55, of 151 South Cline Ave., Magnolia, was indicted on 24 counts of Pandering Sexually Oriented Material Involving a Minor, all second-degree felonies, and 12 counts of Pandering Sexually Oriented Matter Involving a Minor, each a fourth-degree felony.

Carroll County Prosecuting Attorney Steven D. Barnett said between March 5 and March 29, DeFord electronically possessed and downloaded 12 images of child sex abuse. 

Following a cyber tip, sheriff deputies searched his electronics and discovered the material. 

According to public records in Carroll County, DeFord is a 25 percent owner of Carroll Lanes Bowling Alley in Carrollton. He was also a bowling coach at Sandy Valley High School for the six years, from the 2017-2018 season through the 2022-2023 season.

Other indictments 

Others indicted during the Oct. 2 half-day session include the man who fled from deputies in August and then jumped off a bridge in Stark County. 

Thomas J. Snyder, 35, of 5081 Citrus Rd., Malvern was indicted on two counts of Domestic Violence, Disrupting Public Service, Abduction and Failure to Comply with Order of Signal of a Police Officer. 

Barnett said between Aug. 24-29, Snyder assaulted two females who lived with him. During the investigation, Snyder fled from deputies who attempted to stop his vehicle near his residence. He fled into Stark County, where he eventually stopped the vehicle, got out and jumped off the SR 44 overpass onto SR 64. He sustained serious injuries. 

Snyder was also indicted by a Carroll County grand jury July 9 on three counts of Domestic Violence.

He was released on a $100,000 personal recognizance bond and placed on electronically monitored house arrest and ordered not to have contact with the victims. 

Other indictments

Andrew C. Kurtz, 49, of 3205 Germano Rd., Carrollton, two counts of Prohibitions Concerning Companion Animals, both fifth-degree felonies, and two counts of Prohibitions Concerning Companion Animals, both first-degree misdemeanors. 

Between July 1 and Aug. 6, Kurtz attempted to neuter a dog and shorten the tail of another dog himself, which resulted in serious injury to the animals. 

Tammy Kay Roof, 54, of 321 North Canton St., Malvern, Domestic Violence. Roof and her daughter were arrested following a Sept. 22 altercation at Roof’s home. Roof was previously convicted of Domestic Violence in 2018.

Arraignments are scheduled Oct. 17 at 8:30 a.m. before Carroll County Common Pleas Judge Michael V. Repella, II.
