Three records were broken and one was literally smashed when the champion market goats were sold during the 2024 Carroll County Junior Fair Small Animal Sale.

New marks were etched in the record books for the grand and reserve champion goats and the reserve champion market goat, but the record for the champion goat carcass was smashed with the new mark certain to stand for years into the future.

The sister-brother team of Kylie and Henry Campbell led off the frenzy of bids with the grand and reserve champion market goats.

Kylie’s 80-lb goat fetched a bid of $38 per pound from Noah Allison/Richardson Electric, which bested the old record of $30.

Bidding was brisk for Henry Campbell’s 89-lb. goat. When the gavel fell, Andy Drushel of Paul’s Landscaping and Outdoors of Cuyahoga Falls was the winning bidder at $27 per pound. The older record was $21.

Bidding was so brisk for Abagail Bailey’s 35-pound goat carcass. The bids came so fast, the display bid board located outside the sale  couldn’t keep up as the bids climbed higher…and higher.

When the air cleared and the board caught up with the selling price, Sheckler Excavating paid $110 per pound for the champion carcass.

Auctioneer Mike Lozier announced it was a new record, saying, “This is one is sure to stand for years to come!”

The previous record was $30 per pound.

Larry Hawk Farms and Jason and Denise McIntire set the final new market goat record when they paid $95 per pound for Jalyn Eddy’s 55 lb. goat carcass.

Rounding out the champions in the market goal sale were Malia Schaar’s 79 lb. Carroll County Born and Raised goat and Kinsey Thompson’s 73 lb. reserve champion county born and raised goat.

Martin and Michelle Brumbaugh paid $25 per point for Schaar’s goat and Fresh off The Farm (Mike and Faith Christy) paid $20 per pound for Thompson’s reserve champion.

Twenty-six goats were sold during the auction, ranged from $6 per pound to $15 per pound for the non-champions and the entire goat sale totaled $30,709.50.

Sale total

The grand total for all animals sold during the small animal sale was $110.937.50.

Turkeys

Encino Energy paid a record $3,100 for Grant I. Thompson’s reserve champion turkey. The old mark was $3,000.

Huebner Chevrolet & Subaru and J. Green Excavating combined to purchase Kherrington Roudebush’s grand champion turkey for $2,600.

A dozen market turkeys were sold ranging from $600 to the high bid for $3,100. The turkey sale totaled $12,650.

Chickens

Eighty-four pens of market chickens led off the sale, held in the Ashton Event Center, with Auctioneer Steve Cronebaugh calling out bids.

No new records were set, but one was tied when Savanna Clough sold her reserve champion pen of three chickens to Kim Davis Insurance Agency/ Ron Ruegg Automotive for $1,600.

Veteran showman Olivia Gromley led off the division with the grand champion pen of chickens, which sold to Encino Energy for $1,500.

Prices started at $400. Lozier agreed to bump the price of those who did not sell for $500 to that level.

The chicken sale totaled $52,300.

Ducks

Dr. Carl Fry was the winning bidder for Benjamin Hagen’s pen of two ducks. The Carrollton physician paid $2,000 for the pen.

EOG Resources paid $1,400 for Kaliyah Fry’s reserve champion pen of ducks.

Eighteen pens of ducks were sold ranging in price from $200 to $500 for non-champions. The total for the duck sale was $7,200.

Rabbits

The Miller sister, Anna and Katie sold their grand and reserve champion pen of three rabbits their grandparents, Fred and Gloria Gordon. The Gordon’s paid $700 for Anna’s pen and $800 for Katie’s rabbits.
