Jazz music, arts & crafts and more featured at Minerva festival

The 10th annual Brick Street Art & Jazz Festival comes to Minerva’s historic North Market Street May 14, featuring a wide range of musical styles, as well as interactive art activities for all ages, food, and fine crafts.

Professional bands scheduled to perform include Henrique Alvim at 12:30 p.m., playing Brazilian jazz guitar; Erbo & the Buzz Factor at 3 p.m., playing jazz with steel drums; and the Alliance Symphony Orchestra Big Band 5-7 p.m.

Live music will begin even before the festival officially opens, with saxophonist Denny Ott playing during set up, at 10 a.m. High-school jazz bands performing during the day include Stage Dawgs at STEAMM Academy at 11:45 a.m.; the Northwest High School Rock and Jazz bands, at 1:45 p.m. and 2:15 p.m.; and Minerva High School’s Jazz Band at 4:15 p.m.

The festival will offer a wide variety of interactive art activities for all ages. Hands-on projects will be provided by Minerva Public Library, SPARK, and the Kids’ Art Area, sponsored by Minerva Area Federal Credit Union.

Other activities will include strolling magic by Tim Angeloni, noon-2 p.m.; balloon creations by Joe Delagrange, 2-4 p.m., sponsored by Consumers National Bank; origami by Michael Roy’s Cirque du Papier, 4-6 p.m., drum circles at 1 and 4 p.m., a giant xylophone, a public typewriter, a knitting circle, the Art Bus, and more.

Throughout the festival, artists will demonstrate their skills, including woodturning, pastel drawing and wool processing.

Minerva’s downtown shops will be open, and many artists and fine crafters will be selling their work, ranging from jewelry, to handmade soaps, scrubs and lotions, to fabric and wood creations, to decorative items, and much more.

Food will be available, including sandwiches from Candlelight Catering, baked goods, kettle corn, French waffles, and lemonade. The village’s DORA will be in effect during the festival, and DORA beverages may be purchased at Sandy Springs Brewing Co., Que Pasa Mexican Restaurant, Stoney Inn and the Normandy Inn.

Admission to the festival is free, and it will go forward rain or shine.
