Fox Twp. trio puts sewing skills to use making masks for health care workers<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Carroll County trio is aiding the effort to make cloth masks for local health-related facilities.
Maddie Warner, her grandmother, Grace Gardner, and Dakota Hay are spending a portion of their days sitting at a sewing machine in Gardner\u2019s Fox Twp. home doing what they can to help with the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
\u201cWhen they closed Carrollton Schools, Maddie was looking for something to do to help,\u201d said Gardner. \u201cMy daughter, Cori Warner, works at the Mercy facility in Carrollton. She asked if they could use masks we made at home. They approved us and made the pattern available.\u201d
Maddie, a fifth-grade student at Carrollton, and Hay, a CHS graduate, began cutting out and sewing the masks immediately.
In spite of her young age, Maddie is an experienced seamstress, learning to sew by taking projects through the Carroll County 4-H program. She even has her own sewing machine and sews masks for children. She made her own dress for the father-daughter dance at the school last year. Gardner and Hay, who is also a 4-H member, spend their time sewing masks for adults.
To date, they have sewn about 50 masks for employees at Mercy and Aultman facilities in Carrollton. They may be used at Aultman and Mercy hospitals in Canton. They also made masks for employees of a security company owned by Maddie\u2019s dad, Danny Warner.
\u201cWe also would like to make masks for employees at local nursing homes and assisted living facilities, if they have time to get to them,\u201d noted Gardner.
Gardner noted it is good way for the trio to bond, while helping out the local community.
\u201cBoth girls wanted to do it,\u201d she said. \u201cThe girls are not afraid to tackle new projects. I work at the school, and since it is shut down, it is a way for all of us to pay it forward. Maddie is involved in the Kids for A Community Project through the 4-H program, according to Grace, who is a 4-H advisor with her husband, John.
