Hornets put sting on TCC

The once-beaten Malvern Hornets jumped out to a 19-0 lead and cruised to a 78-50 win over Tuscarawas Central Catholic (TCC) Jan. 20 in the Malvern gym.
The hosts led 23-5 after the opening period, 40-18 at intermission and 60-35 after the third period.
Five players scored in double figures for the winners, led by Rodney Smith with 17. Mitchell Minor contributed 15, J’Allen Barrino and Dylan Phillips 12 apiece and Drake Hutchison 10.
Minor sank five 3-point shots, Phillips two and Smith one. Smith was four-for-four at the foul line the winners, who only made seven trips to the charity stripe on nine fouls committed ty Tusky Valley.
Minor led the team in rebounds, pulling down seven of his team’s 26 boards. Jordan Cherry grabbed six for Tusky Valley and scored a game high 22 points.
Malvern improved to 13-1 overall and remain unbeaten at 8-0 in Inter Valley Conference play.
Junior varsity: Malvern won 33-27.
