In the midst of the uncertainty surrounding the high school fall sports season, at least one sport is moving forward: high school golf.
CHS Boys
The Warriors of Carrollton officially started practice Aug. 1 and kick off the season this week with a busy schedule. Wednesday, they travel to Union Country Club at Dover to participate in the Tuscarawas Central Catholic Saints Invitational, Thursday they host Malvern at noon at Carroll Meadows Golf Course and Friday they travel to Tannenhauf Golf Club along with 12 other teams for the Marlington Dukes Tournament.
The Warriors travel to River Green Golf Course Aug. 10 for the Indian Valley Early Bird Tournament and then visit the site of last year’s Division II state tournament, NorthStar Golf Club in Sunbury Aug. 11. The team will compete with some of the top Division II teams in the state during the tournament. The team returns home Aug. 13 to host Marlington in their first Eastern Buckeye Conference match of the season. Tee off is at 1 p.m.
The Messenger caught up with Coach Chris Barto and Assistant Coach Gary Cogan last week at Carroll Meadows where several golfers were participating in a voluntary open range event.
Both coaches expressed excitement about the new season and the team the Warriors will put on the course.
“A lot of the boys have been attending the open range events all summer and things look very promising for us to have a great season,” said Barto.
Cogan noted the Warriors finished third in the district tournament last year and will have the opportunity to face the first and second place teams at the Aug. 11 tournament at Sunbury.
“That will be a good opportunity for us to play some of the top golfers in the state in Division II early in the season,” said Cogan.
