Malvern boys team moving on in Division III

The Malvern Boys Golf Team earned a trip to the District Tournament by firing a 333 to place sixth at the Division III East District Sectional Tournament at Cambridge Country Club Sept. 25. Sophomore Cooper Kiehl shot a career best 77 to tie for 8th place in the individual standings. Junior Cameron Good fired an 83.  Sophomore Tyler Pelle also posted a career best 84 while his freshman brother Ayden Pelle stayed steady shooting an 89.  

The top six teams and top six individuals not on a qualifying team advance to the district tournament. Eighty five golfers participated in the tournament.

Conotton Valley placed 7th in the 16-team field. Sophomore Garrett Reiter fired an 83 to advance to the district tournament. He placed 19th overall. 

Seniors Brooks Bower and Logan Reiter both shot 87s while sophomore Kaden Leggett carded a 92, and fifth man Carson Milburn laid down a 106.

The Carrollton boys fell one slot short of qualifying as a team for the district tournament. 

The team competed in the Division I sectional Sept. 25 at Jaycee Golf Course.

The Warriors placed fourth with the top three teams advancing. 

Dover won with a 314, followed by Tri-Valley 318, Steubenville 329 and Carrollton 332.

Carrollton senior Everett Brooks and junior Michael Mullen qualified for the district tournament as individuals. Both golfers tied for eighth with scores of 82. The top three individuals advanced.  Also scoring for the Warriors were Nathan Sutton 83, and Bryce Taylor 85. Bryce Lonca scored a 90 as the fifth man.  The district tournament is scheduled Oct. 9 at Eagle Sticks Golf Course.

Dover senior Ryan Yoder was medalist with a 68.

Division II Sectional at River Greens

The Minerva Lions and Sandy Valley Cardinals competed Sept. 23 at River Greens. The Cardinals placed 6th and the Lions 8th. 

Scoring for the Cardinals were Lucas Ellington and Thorn Stenger, both 80, and Hudson Woods and Trey Nicholson 89. Gage Walter was the fifth man, carding a 90.

Freshman Wil Blackburn carded an 83 to lead the Lions. Carsen Earley fired an 89, followed by Reid Spall 90, Dario Sevek 92 and Jeremiah Smith 93.

The top four teams and top three individuals not on a qualifying team moved on to the district event. 

Three individuals, two teams advance on girls side

A Carrollton Lady Warriors golfer, two Malvern golfers and the Minerva Lady Lions team are all headed for the second round of postseason golf action. 

Carrollton and Minerva  competed at Division I sectional tournament Sept. 23 at Cambridge Country Club. 

The Warriors, who previously participated in the Division II sectional tournament at Carroll Meadows, moved to Division I this year. The top three teams in the nine-team field qualified to the district tournament and the top three individuals not on a qualifying team also advanced. 

Dover won the tournament with a 374 score, led by Mya Downing, who earned medalist honors with an 80.

Minerva placed second with a 392, followed by New Philadelphia (393), John Glenn (408) and Carrollton (408). The tie with John Glenn was broken by the fifth golfer’s score, which gave the nod to John Glenn.

Minerva freshman Peyton Beaumariage led the Lions with a 91, sophomore Delaney Sell carded 95, junior Maddy Bartley 101 and junior Hannah Kirkpatrick 105.

Junior Kaylee Russell placed third and earned the top individual qualifying spot to the district tournament. She carded rounds of 46 on the front 9 and 42 on the back 9 for a score of 88. 

Other Warriors scoring included junior Jada Moore 95, junior Hannah Little 101, and freshman Gwen Sargeant 124.

The district tournament is scheduled Oct. 10 at 9 a.m. at EagleSticks Golf Club. 

Division II sectional

The Sandy Valley Lady Cardinals and Malvern Hornets traveled to Carroll Meadows to participate in the Sectional Golf Tournament along with two Malvern golfers last week..

The Cardinals recorded the team’s lowest team score of the year, 368, which placed the team fifth and earned a berth in the district tournament. It is the first district tournament berth in school history.

Leading the way for the Cardinals was Ava Schoeppner, who shot an 18-hole career low 77, and finished 7th overall.

Ashlynn Glaser and Charlei Stenger both had strong rounds finishing in the top 30. Peyton Nicholson carded her best score for 18 holes on the year and Kylie Meininger had her second lowest 18-hole score. 

The top six teams and top six individuals not on a qualifying team advanced to the district tournament. 

Malvern senior Lauren Brown carded a 77 and earned a district berth as an individual. She placed tied for seventh place in the overall standings. Junior Kami Raybon shot a career best 83 and also qualified for the district tournament. She finished 16th.

Tusky Valley won the tournament with a 328, followed by Garaway (328), Fort Frye (335), Meadowbrook (367) and Sandy Valley (368) in the 19-team field. Edison placed seventh. 

The district tournament was scheduled to be held this Wednesday, Oct. 1, at Cambridge Country Club.

“I could not be more happy for and proud of our kids!  The hard work they continue to put in is paying dividends in the postseason,” commented Coach Lance Gram.
