Conotton Valley announces 2022 Athletic Hall of Fame inductees

The Conotton Valley High School Athletic Hall of Fame Committee announced its selections for the Class of 2022. 

Five individuals and one team will be inducted Jan. 22 during a ceremony at the high school. Inductees include Mindy Craig, Ed Galigher, Denise McGuire (deceased), Doug Smalley, Regina Scott-Statler, and the 1995 Football Team.

Mindy Craig

Craig is a 1987 graduate of Conotton Valley High School who lettered all four years in volleyball and basketball. She also lettered two years in cheerleading. Her honors in volleyball were the CV High Point Award, Best Offensive Player, Most Valuable Player, Class A Honorable Mention- District 5 Coaches Association, Class A 1st Team- District 5 Coaches Association, Player of the Year- District 5 Coaches Association, member of the 3rd and 4th Annual Ohio Volleyball All Star Match and was a member of the team that won the first sectional championship in school history. Her basketball honors as a Rocket include leading rebounder, leading scorer, Class A Honorable Mention District 5 Coaches Association, 2nd Team All-Star News Herald, Class A 2nd Team District 5 Coaches Association, Class A Honorable Mention Associated Press Eastern District All Star, member of the 5th Annual District 5 Coaches All-Star Girls Basketball Game, VFW Outstanding Athlete and a member of the first Girls basketball team to win a sectional championship at Conotton Valley.

She attended Ashland University to play volleyball and later returned to coach at her alma mater.

Ed Galigher

Galigher is a 1988 graduate of Conotton Valley. He lettered all four years in football, basketball, and baseball. His honors in baseball include: 1st Team East District and 1st Team All-County. In football Ed was 1st Team East District (two years), 1st Team All County (two years), and 1st Team All-Ohio (two years). Galigher was selected to play in the North-South All Star Football Game. He attended Grove City College and played baseball and football.

Denise McGuire

McGuire was a 1982 graduate of Conotton Valley. She earned four letters in basketball and three volleyball letters. Denise had many honors in her time at CV including Class A Honorable Mention- District 5 Coaches Association, Class A Honorable Mention- Associated Press All-Ohio, 1st Team All Star-News Herald, 2nd Team Associated Press Eastern District All Star, 1,000-point scorer (1,234 total), Class A 1st Team- District 5 Coaches Association, and she was a member of the District 5 Coaches All-Star Girls Basketball team. Denise attended Walsh College on a basketball scholarship and then moved to work as a licensed Psychologist. She went on to be the founder/president of Get in the Zone LLC (professional training and coaching). She worked with LPGA, PGA, collegiate and high school golfers. She also developed and delivered a program for the “Extreme Weight Loss: Bootcamp” TV series.

Doug Smalley

Smalley is a 1982 graduate of Conotton Valley. He lettered all four years in baseball, basketball, and football and qualified for the Times Reporter’s 1-on-1 Basketball Tournament as a junior and a senior as well as winning the Eastern District All Star Award in basketball. In football, he was named to the North-South Football Team and was 2nd Team All-Ohio. Following high school, Doug attended Ohio University where he lettered/started for two years.

Regina Scott-Statler

Scott-Statler, class of 1982, was a basketball standout at Conotton Valley. She scored 1,280 career points, received Honorable Mention All-Ohio, 1st Team District 5 and 2nd Team Eastern District. She also was the area scoring leader, participated in the OVAC All-Star game and the East-West All-Star game. She averaged 21 points per game her senior year.

1995 Football Team

The 1995 Football Team went 9-1, defeating Strasburg, TCC, Newcomerstown, Bellaire St. John, Jewett-Scio, Weirton Madonna, Toronto, Northridge and Buckeye Trail. Their lone loss was to Wellsville.

Inductees will be honored between the Jan. 22 afternoon junior varsity and varsity boys basketball game between the Tuscarawas Central Catholic Saints and the Rockets. The junior varsity game will begin at 1 p.m. A hospitality room will be open in the library/media center from noon-4:30 for any individuals wishing to visit and congratulate the inductees.

The induction banquet will take place at 4:30 p.m. with dinner to follow. Tickets are $20 each and can be purchased in the school office or by calling the Athletic Office at 740-269-2711, extension 1203.
