CHS golfers bound for state’s top tourney

The Carrollton boys golf team won its second consecutive Division II East District golf title and qualified for the state tournament Oct. 14 and 15 at The Ohio State University Scarlet Course.
The Warriors scored a new team record of 295 on the 18-hole EagleSticks course at Zanesville Oct. 3 to win the title. St. Clairsville finished second, 33 strokes behind the Warriors, with a score of 328.
Sandy Valley senior and defending Division II state champion Connor Ritter earned medalist honors with a 70 and was the lone individual to advance to the state tournament. Carrollton was the only team to advance.
Jaxon Rinkes finished one shot behind Ritter with a 71 to earn runner-up medalist honors, on the Warrior team of all seniors. John Birong tied for third place individually with a 73. Cayden Rininger’s score of 74 was good for fifth place. Colton Moore fired a 77 and tied for sixth. Micah Barkan turned in an 82 and tied for 11th place in the field of 47 golfers.
It is the third consecutive year this group of Carrollton golfers qualified for the state tournament, finishing second at the East District Tournament in 2020 and winning the school’s first district championship in 2021. Last year, the Warriors defeated favorite John Glenn by four strokes, 312-316, to win the title.
The team placed third in the Division II state championship last year.
“We were the favorites coming into districts and the boys did what they needed to,” said longtime Carrollton Coach Chris Barto. “This is a great addition to their last season as a Warrior.  It’s something they will remember for a long time.”
Carrollton recently won the Eastern Buckeye Conference (EBC) tournament and claimed its fourth championship.
Minerva senior Case Waller, playing in his second Division II district tournament, shot a 91 and tied for 30th place.

Conotton Valley senior Gaige Galigher shot an 88 at the Division III District Tournament last week at River Greens and tied for 12th place.
