CCM/Carol McIntire Carrollton junior Isabella Nuzzolillo sends a shot toward Marlington last week at Community Field.

Carrollton battled back from a 3-1 halftime deficit to tie Marlington 3-3 in the Eastern Buckeye Conference opener Sept. 4 at Community Field.

The Lady Dukes struck first when senior Anastasia Vitale sent the ball into the corner of the net at the 28:44 mark of the first.

The Warriors went right to work and almost exactly three minutes later, Chelsea Pesta put the Warriors on the board with an unassisted goal. Vitale picked up her second goal at the 20-minute mark of the first to put her team back on top 2-1 and Emma Hone extended the lead to 3-1 with a goal with just under five minutes remaining in the half.

It took the Lady Warriors the majority of the second half to crank up the offense. Pesta, assisted by teammate Isabella Nuzzolillo, picked up her second goal with 12 minutes remaining in the second half. Addison Jurkeiwicz tied the game with a goal with three minutes remaining. Lilliana Menarcheck provided the assist.

BOYS SOCCER

During a busy week of action, the Minerva Lions suffered a 7-1 loss to West Branch in Eastern Buckeye Conference action Sept. 3.

Zavier Wheeler scored the lone Minerva goal with Xander Mueller providing the assist. Goalie Nathaniel Reed had 10 saves.

West Branch led in shots 34-1 and corner kicks 8-2.

CANTON CENTRAL CATHOLIC

Canton Central Catholic took advantage of opportunities and defeated Minerva 6-0 in non-league soccer action Aug. 31.

The Lions fell behind 4-0 in the first half and dropped to 2-2 on the young season. Central Catholic led in shots on goal 11-7 and in corner kicks 7-4.

“Central tonight capitalized on their opportunities by making each shot count,” noted Minerva Coach Tyler Stewart. “They have a great team that possesses the ball and passes in triangles which helps bring the ball up the field. With having to adapt our line up due to injury I thought the boys overall had a decent game. The turf was wet due to rain which increased the pace of play which I don’t think helped.”

CANTON MCKINLEY

Two days earlier, the Lions earned a 7-0 win over Canton McKinley behind a balanced offensive attack.

Jeremiah Smith and Xander Mueller both scored two goals with Benjamin Smith, Jace Wright and Cesar Calel Cos each adding one goal. Mueller, was credited with two assists, Michael Crissman, Smith, Zavier Wheeler and Wyatt Gonzalez had one apiece.

The Lions led 4-0 at intermission on the way to the win. The winners led in shots on goal 17-2 and in corner kicks 9-2.

“Today we moved the ball with a purpose and shot with great accuracy,” said Stewart. “You could tell some of the players were playing with more confidence which is great to see.”

SANDY VALLEY

The Sandy Valley Cardinals earned a 6-2 road win over the Massillon Tigers Sept. 5.

Freshman Gleason Pfeffer opened the scoring with a header into the goal at minute 33 of the first half. The Cardinal’s next goal came at the 8:30 mark of the first half by junior Jonathan Wagner off an assist by junior Sean Felcyn.

The second half was hard fought in the heat of the evening. The Cardinals added a goal at minute 15 of the second half by junior Maduxx McCort off an assist from junior Quinn Curley.

McCort picked up a second goal at the 11 minute mark, just four minutes after his first. Senior Landen Wigfield added to the score with a goal that went through multiple Tiger defenders to make its way into the net. Rounding out the night with just one minute left in the game was junior Caden Biehl scoring his first goal of the season.
