Carrollton sweeps team titles at Cogan Invitational

Twenty-one high school track teams braved cool and rainy conditions at the 8th annual Larry Cogan Invitational April 29 at Community Field in Carrollton.
The event, named for longtime Carrollton track and field coach Larry Cogan, featured a field of 10 boys teams and 11 girls teams, including five area teams.
Both Carrollton teams won championship titles. The boys team garnered 104 points to claim the title. Minerva placed fourth with 66, Sandy Valley fifth, 58; Malvern ninth, 44 and Southern Local 10th, 29.
On the girls side, the Lady Warriors tallied 92.5 points to garner the title with Minerva fourth, 70.166; Malvern fifth, 70; Southern Local seventh, 55; and Sandy Valley ninth, 26.666
Cogan’s career as a track coach at Carrollton spanned 28 years. He started as an assistant in 1981 and became the head coach in 1986, a position he held through 2013. He coached both boys and girls teams during that time. He continues to serve as track official at the local level as well as during tournament season. He was on the track Friday at the invitational as a starter.
