Kenneth W. Moffat, 65, of Sherrodsville, died Monday night, Sept. 6, 2021, in Community Hospice Truman House at New Philadelphia following a six-month illness.

Born Jan. 5, 1956, in Steubenville, he was the son of the late R. J. and Virginia Moffat. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved grandson, Garett Lane Rice, and two brothers, Eddie Moffat and David Moffat.

Kenny retired in 2018 as the parts manager from the Steubenville Truck Center, Inc. after 30 years of service. He was a graduate of Steubenville (Big Red) High School. He was always very mindful of his home and his community, having served for 10 years as the mayor of the village of Sherrodsville, and served as president of Sherrodsville Village Council.

He was proud of the opportunity he was afforded when he became the assistant head coach of the Conotton Valley Rocket Basketball team for two years. He was a big fan of all Conotton Valley sports and was a familiar sight at most of their games. He was very supportive of all local youth activities, including sports and school functions, and was a fixture at the “Hill of Horror” haunted house each year. He loved participating in all activities with the kids … many of whom referred to him as “Pap”.  He delighted in playing basketball and participated in “3 on 3” tournaments for many years against players who were much younger than himself. His enthusiasm for the kids also spilled over to his grandkids, as he made them a priority in his life … and they soon learned that acting his age was not Kenny’s specialty. He loved music and was a knowledgeable fan of 1960s and 1970s rock and roll music. His family will miss his strength of character, his joy of life displayed in his sense of humor, and his insistent call to “Family Meetings”.

He is survived by his wife Cheryl B. Buckey Moffat, whom he married Nov. 29, 1976; his daughter, Mrs. Amy L. (Richard L. Jr.) Rice of Scio; his son, Kenneth D. Moffat of the home; his grandchildren, Gabby and Evan Rice of Scio; a great-grandson; Lincoln Garett Rice; three sisters, Mary Lou Visnic of East Liverpool, Cathy DeStefano of Follansbee, WV, and Mrs. Cecilia (David) Thomas of North Fort Myers, FL, and a large family of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted. Saturday, Sept. 11, at 4 p.m. in Baxter-Gardner Funeral Home at Sherrodsville with Pastor Jim Manbeck officiating. Calling hours will be held Saturday from 1 p.m. until time of services in the funeral home.

Contributions in Kenny’s memory may be made to Community Hospice, 716 Commercial Ave. S.W., New Philadelphia, OH 44663. To leave an online condolence, visit www.baxtergardner.com.
