Gilbert H. Thornton, 85, of Carrollton, passed away on Thursday, May 9, 2024 at Altercare of Alliance.
A son of the late George and Carrie (Eads) Thornton, he was born on Feb. 7, 1939, in Skelton, West Virginia.
During his life, Gilbert worked as a lineman before getting hired at the Carroll County Highway Garage in 1973, where he later retired from in 1998. He proudly served his country in the United States Army Reserves from 1955-1956 and was a former member of the United Presbyterian Church in Carrollton. Gilbert trained and owned horses for over 25 years. He was a hard worker, however when he wasn’t working, he enjoyed spending time with his family, as well as socializing with his many friends and neighbors on his front porch.
He is survived by one son, Daniel (Anna) Thornton; daughter, Lori (Jarod) Roof; and three granddaughters, Chelsea (Cody) Whitmore, Jessica Fleck (Matt Buterbaugh), and Courtney Roof (Eric Swansiger).
Preceding him in death along with his parents, is his wife, Patricia in 1994, infant son, Michael, and fifteen siblings.
A private graveside service was held in Westview Cemetery in Carrollton, Ohio.
Dodds Funeral Home assisted the family with services.
