A Malvern man was arrested Aug. 29 after a high-speed chase ended with Thomas J. Snyder, 36, jumping off a SR 44 overpass and onto SR 62 in Stark County.

At 8:51 that morning, Carroll County 911 received a call from a female reporting she was assaulted by Snyder. While a Carroll County deputy was taking the report from the female, Snyder passed him at a high rate of speed heading west on Alliance Rd. The deputy tried to catch up with Snyder but was unsuccessful.

At 11:05 a.m., with the assistance of the Minerva Police Department, Snyder was located in Minerva and a traffic stop was made on E. Line St, Minerva. Canton Police Department’s K-9 officer and Canton Regional SWAT Team were requested to assist the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department and Minerva PD on the traffic stop.

After 54 minutes of attempted negotiation to comply, Snyder once again fled from police, heading west on SR 30 and beginning a dual county pursuit. The pursuit began in Minerva and into multiple jurisdictions of Stark County. After just over an hour, the pursuit ended when Snyder stopped his vehicle and jumped off the SR 44 overpass and onto SR 62 where he was apprehended.

Snyder suffered facial and head injuries and was transported to Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital by Nimishillen EMS. Snyder has since been flown to Cleveland Clinic Akron General Hospital. No further updates are available at this time.

Carroll County Sheriff’s Office released a news release stating, “We extend our thanks to all mutual aid departments, which include Carroll County Probation Dept., Minerva PD, Canton PD with Canton PD K-9 officer, Canton Regional SWAT, Ohio State Patrol Canton Post 76, East Canton Police Department, Osnaburg Fire Department/EMS, Louisville Police Department, Sheriff George Maier, Stark County Sheriff’s Office, Nimishillen EMS and Canton Towing.”

Snyder was indicted by a Carroll County grand jury July 7 on three counts of Domestic Violence.

During an arraignment hearing July 12, he was released on a $100,000 personal recognizance bond. He was placed on electronically-monitored house arrest and ordered not to have any contact with the victims

A criminal protection order was filed Aug. 5 in Carroll County Common Pleas Court. Snyder was scheduled to attend a pretrial hearing Aug. 29.
