Two days after fire destroyed a 40×100-feet barn used to store hay and straw, smoke continued to escape from bales of hay exposed when the structure collapsed.
Augusta Volunteer Fire Department Chief Charles Wright said his department was toned June 12 at 8:50 p.m. for a fully involved structure fire at 1235 Brush Rd., Minerva.
“When we arrived, we found the barn fully involved in flames and partially collapsed,” Wright said.
He requested mutual aid from Sandy Creek Fire District, Hanover Twp. (Columbiana County), Great Trail Fire District and Carrollton Village firefighters. In all, Wright said about 45 firefighters battled the blaze for about three hours.
The chief said fresh round bales of hay were placed in the barn, which is partially a two-story structure, two days ago and square bales of straw were stacked in the barn about two weeks ago. There were no animals in the barn.
The structure, which was a total loss, is owned by the family of the late Larry Hawk, Jr.
Wright said the family was to meet with the insurance company Monday.
Augusta firefighters returned to the station at 12:13 a.m. June 13.
